Nomadic: people who move around all the time looking for food.
Bering Strait: body of water between lands ancestors of Native Americans crossed the land bridge to North America.
Land bridge: ex: before where people crossed over
Middle ages: was a time of Black Death.
Crusades: series of wars undertaken by European Christians between the 11th and 14th cent. To recover the Holy Land from the Muslims.
Renaissance: a time of rebirth
Monarch: a govt. when someone rules over a kingdom, like a king or queen
Compass: advance of European technology helped on ships
Printing press: advance of European technology to print newspaper.
King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella: gave Christopher Columbus money for coming to America
Christopher Columbus: discovered America
Slavery: Africans and Native Americans used as slaves
Smallpox: disease given to Native Americans
Three G's: reasons for exploration are god, glory and gold
Columbian exchange: 'It was a meeting of civilizations which previously had no idea of each other's existence.'
The long-term effects:
Brought the potato, the pineapple, the turkey, dahlias, sunflowers, magnolias, maize, chilies and chocolate across the Atlantic.
On the other hand, tens of millions died in the pandemics of the 16th century, victims of smallpox, measles and the other diseases brought by Europeans (and don't forget that the African slave trade was begun by the Europeans, to replace the work force they had decimated).
Chapter 2: European colonization of the Americas
Conquistador: an adventurer military leader in the Spanish conquest of the New World in the 16th cent. Francisco Pizarro, the conqueror of Peru, and Hernán Cortés, the conqueror of Mexico, were the greatest of the conquistadors. The name is frequently used to mean any daring, ruthless adventurer.
