The US Is an Overweight Country

Obesity is a condition of being significantly overweight. Obesity is having an excess amount of body fat. In today's economy there is a high percentage of obesity. The population of obese people is rising every year, not only are adults becoming obese, but it is becoming a big problem in the youth of today. Obesity effects the way of life that one lives.

What is obesity? Obesity is men who are 25 percent body fat and women with more than 30 percent body fat (WIN). In scientific terms, obesity occurs when a person consumes more calories than he or she burns. A person's body fat is weighed by being put underwater or to use and X-ray test called dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Other ways are by measuring the thickness of the layer of fat just under the skin and sending a harmless amount of electricity through a person's body.

Doctors also use weight over height tables for other means of diagnosing obesity. Over the past few years doctors have been using a thing called body mass index (BMI) to measure overweight and obesity. BMI uses a mathematical formula based on the person's height and weight. BMI equals weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared (BMI=kg/m20). A person with a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese (WIN).

Obesity is caused by several different things depending on the person. Overweight and obesity result from an energy imbalance, which involves eating to many calories and not getting enough physical activity (Nutrition). The factors that cause obesity are genetic, environmental, psychological, and other factors may all play a part (WIN).
