Introduction
Studies show that 22 percent of Americans over the age of 18 suffer from a mental disorder. There are many mental illnesses, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is just one of many. The effects of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder are very abnormal and adverse. OCD can cause a person to perform outlandish behaviors and strange actions such as meticulously cleaning, double-checking things and hoarding various things.
The Interesting thing about this disorder is that many people can be affected by it and are unaware of their mental state. Many people with this disorder are affected emotionally and mentally, and because of this they are weighed down by their disorder.
The Efffects
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a mental illness in which a person is burdened by disquieting thoughts and is trapped in vexatious behaviors that are difficult to overcome. People with OCD have obsessions and/or compulsions which cause them to senselessly repeat things .
Having OCD has been said to be like having mental hiccups and can affect anyone from preschoolers to adults. OCD cases can be mild or severe and because of this many people can have OCD and not even be aware of it.
There are two main parts of OCD: obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are impulses, images or thoughts that occur monotonously and are uncontrollable. Obsessions may cause uncomfortable feelings such as disgust, doubt, or fear. Some common obsessions are: the fear of contamination and germs, invasive sexual urges or thoughts, excessive moral or religious doubts, imagining hurting oneself or imagining losing control of aggressive urges.
People with OCD tend to believe that they will get rid of their obsessions by performing compulsions. Compulsions are acts that are performed monotonously by specific rules. OCD compulsions are not performed to satisfy the person. They perform these compulsions simply...
