Children's Music

Children's music is a very rewarding market where, if you play your cards right you can earn millions of dollars. If children's music is simple, not too fast, catchy and all the songs are based on activities which will help the child learn skills or exercise then it will be very successful. Not only are the elements of children's music important but the way in which they are performed is a key feature to how much the children will enjoy it. Play School is an example of how music and presentation can be integrated together to make a fun learning environment for children because in the life of a young child learning, doing, playing, singing are not separate activities but playschool brings them all together.

Play School began on ABC Television in 1966 and is still running to this day. The reason why Playschool has been such a success and has outlasted almost every other child's program is because firstly the presenters are not only skilled performers and generous, creative, committed people but they show an extraordinary talent for communicating a sense of fun, investing the business of making things, reading stories, singing, dressing up and playing with toys.

Secondly, the format of Playschool relies strongly on its music because singing and dancing communicates very clearly to children and also allows them to use their imagination and come up with their own image of what is happening in the song. For example the song "Dingle Dangle Scarecrow" is about night time and tells the story of how a scarecrow runs around shouting to all the sleeping animals. Children will get a picture of what is happening in their mind as the story unfolds, and each child's will be different and will allow them to use their imagination.

It is Important to base songs on activities that allow children to learn and have fun at the same time. Around the age of three, most children show an interest in household chores and routines. Some of these jobs children can do themselves so cleaning is a good topic for songs because they can exercise, learn how to clean and have fun all at the same time. Some common characteristics of children's music are acknowledging that the child is there by saying "hello". This makes the child feel special and valued some more characteristics are that all the tunes are simple, straight forward and normally have integrated movements and sounds mixed in with the song like clapping and jumping. This helps children develop their hand-eye coordination and lets them exercise.

Being able to express how you feel in an appropriate way is a very important skill so the song "How Do You Feel Today?" because not only does it acknowledge the child but it asks him/her how they are feeling and then encourages them to feel friendly and happy. This Song could be used to cheer children up and show them how to act when they are happy. It is a simple tune with simple lyrics that ask questions.

Not only does Play School use its published songs, they also use nursery rhymes. This allows children to experience different cultures, events that have happened in the past and the world around them. "London Bridge is Burning Down", "Hickory Dickory Dock", "Frere Jacques" and "Humpty Dumpty" All of these teach lessons and are catchy so children will enjoy and learn from these songs. Because nursery rhymes will be heard more often than most regular songs they will appeal to the children more because the kids will be familiar with the tunes and the lyrics so because of this the children will pay more attention to the lessons and information told in these nursery rhymes.

Play School proves that making songs interactive with simple music which is not too fast, having catchy lyrics and basing the songs on activities which will help the child learn skills or exercise makes the music very successful. Because of this Playschool has run for forty three years and is still one of the most popular children show. Play School's most important achievement has been to create a warm, intimate relationship between the presenter and the viewer. Within that relationship the music leads the child into the worlds of literature, science, mathematics, social behaviour, personal development, music, movement and the environment. Children learn very well through the use of music and Play School does its best to support that learning.
